Can you sell online without GST?

“Sell online without GST” is one of the most searched questions by new sellers. The honest answer: sometimes, depending on what you sell, how much, and where you ship. This page explains the parts that matter so you can have a short, useful conversation with a CA.

Updated October 2026

The general rule

Sellers who supply goods through an e-commerce operator (a platform that collects the payment for them) have historically needed GST registration regardless of turnover. Since October 2023, small suppliers below the threshold may sell through e-commerce operators within their own state without registering, subject to conditions such as enrolment on the GST portal. Supplying goods to other states generally needs registration.

Sellers who sell only through their own website and collect payment themselves follow the normal turnover threshold for their state, but inter-state supply of goods still generally needs registration.

What usually changes the answer

  • Shipping to other states (inter-state supply) generally needs registration
  • Your annual turnover against the threshold for your state
  • Whether you sell on a marketplace or on your own website
  • The product category
